Martin Penny, Gary Douglas, and Robert Powls founded ghd in 2001.[7][8] The three collaborated to buy the rights to a hair straightening iron from a South Korean inventor.[9] The brand quickly took off organically, and the company did not even begin advertising until two years after its launch.[10][11] By then, hair salons and word of mouth carried ghd to £12 million, against a forecast of between £3 million and £4 million.[9]

The "D" models use an optical sensor arrangement which eliminates the need for physical contacts and results in extremely smooth operation.  The sensor requires an external power supply of +10 to 15VDC, connected via a pre-attached pigtail lead with socket.  Matching plug and a power cord are supplied. The images show the base of the GD105MKII bug, and a closeup of the sensor arrangement.  To view an image of the circuit diagram, click here. One might think the sensors themselves should be relatively inexpensive, but in the bug or paddle application the sensors have to be extremely fast.  In fact, the cost of the sensors themselves accounts for 80% of the price difference between the optical and mechanical models, with the balance being the electronics to support them.
That’s the positives. What about criticisms of GHD products? Well, in some cases, GHD straighteners have been reported to experience heating problems and, when you are in a hurry to get to work and need to avoid frizz, it’s incredibly frustrating when your straighteners won’t heat rapidly. However, that’s an issue with individual products, and GHD’s customer service team should be able to sort out a replacement quickly.

Bought these on recommendation of my hairdresser to deal with my chemo damaged hair. Thankfully I didn't lose my hair but it did go really thin during treatment. 18 months on from treatment my once fine, straight and easily managed hair has come back in thick with random curly and wavy bits. My old straighteners which had served me well over the years were snagging, pulling and breaking both the damaged and newly growing hair but these ones glide through the hair with hardly any breakage. The classic semi-automatic "bug" key with mechanical  contacts and double fingerpieces for a wider grip. The devil is in the details, and GHD's choice of materials, dimensions, and other technical features, results in a bug that has an unusually crisp and precise feel over its entire speed range.  N1FN says it feels a bit like the Speed-X 501. Fingerpieces and weight are packed separately, but easy to install. Dot speed adjustment over the entire range (about 18-32WPM) is a breeze with minimal dot dwell adjustment required.
I can't believe Amazon would allow one of their trusted sellers to sell fakes. I received mine today and it took about 5 seconds to realize that it was fake. I could not register it on the ghd website, and I came across the information below to help identify fakes. This straightener did not have a reset button on the plug, and had many more of the 'give-aways' that it was a fake! DO NOT BUY FROM THIS SELLER.
Safety is another strength of GHD. Aside from the automatic 30 minute shut down feature that they have incorporated into all of their heat-related devices, GHD have also taken steps to minimise heat damage. Heat damage is the number one problem with poorly made styling equipment, but it’s less of an issue with collections like the GHD Platinum range. That’s due to the tri-zone system that the Platinum straighteners use. It distributes hear evenly across the pads, instead of collecting heat at certain hotspots. With the heat evenly spread across the pads, it’s easier to avoid scorching your hair accidentally and you should obtain a better finish as well.

Whether you have purchased a GHD styling tool or curling wand, or you will still be using a competitor’s equipment, the answer is almost certainly yes. The spray works by coating hair with a protective layer before you use stylers or curling irons. All it takes is a few sprays to the roots of your hair before taking a couple of seconds to spritz the spray along the length of each hair and then combing it through.
